Visitors in the Houses

Milton’s visitation rules are intended to foster social interaction among students in a healthy, safe and respectful environment for all students. The school encourages students to visit each other, to foster friendships, and practice the skills that lead to meaningful relationships. The visitation policy does not—and should not—assume that students requesting visitation are engaged in an intimate physical or sexual relationship.

Students should be mindful and respectful of the rights of their housemates when using their room during visiting hours. All visitors must be hosted by a resident of that house and, as guests, are expected to observe all house rules. We place a certain degree of trust in our students that, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation and that of their visitor, they will abide by our community expectations. Any failure to respect the spirit and letter of these guidelines may result in disciplinary action.

Each house is equipped with card access that allows residents of the dorm to enter at designated times. During the school day, non-residents of a dorm may not be in the building without explicit adult permission.

Common Room Visitation Guidelines

  • House parents on duty must be present to grant visitation permission.
  • Visitors should remain outside of all house spaces until the host has received confirmation from the on-duty house parent that visitation privileges have been granted.
  • No non-resident is allowed in any house space without the expressed permission of the house parent on duty.  Any non-resident students in the building without an adult’s permission and presence can expect consequences as a result.
  • Once visitors have been approved to visit, they will be required to both sign-in and sign-out to allow house parents on duty to track the number of students in the building in the event of an emergency (e.g., fire alarm, lockdown, etc.).
  • Adherence to all school rules is critical during student visitation and an individual student’s visitation privileges will be impacted if school rules have been violated.

Common Room Visitation Hours

  • Monday–Thursday: 3:30 p.m. until 6 p.m.
  • Friday: 3:30 p.m. until 10:55 p.m.
  • Saturday: 12 p.m. until 10:55 p.m.
  • Sunday: 12 p.m. until 6 p.m.

Weekday Nights

Campus-wide quiet hours are from 7:30–9:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday. Class III and IV students must report to their houses for supervised study hall prior to 7:30 p.m.; if they have a teacher’s note allowing them to work elsewhere on campus, they must present it to the duty person at that time. In the winter, if Class III and IV students are on an athletic team that holds practices during study hours, those students will observe an alternative study hall. Class I and II students have the freedom to choose where on campus they wish to work. Upperclassmen who are not using their evening study time productively may lose this privilege. Visitors may only be in the house during quiet hours if their intent is to study or work on a project and they have permission from the person on duty.

Check-in for all students is at 10 p.m. on weeknights (see School Nights and Exceptions to Boarding Commitments). After evening check-in, students may not leave the house, without special permission, before 6 a.m.
